We had a great time in Brussels for MissionSoil week, which took place from 12-14th November 2024.
The soil cluster meetings offered a great opportunity to meet with colleagues from several EUSoilMission projects and make plans for future collaborations.
MINAGRIS partners Esperanza Huerta Lwanga and Dr Charlotte-Anne Chivers attended several joint cluster meetings, with topics including communication and stakeholder engagement, data management (including an introduction to the SoilWise Project), and soil monitoring indicators.
We have some exciting plans to make as a result of these meetings - stay tuned, and let's deliver healthy soils together! 🤝
MINAGRIS postdoctoral fellow, Eustathios (Stathis) Lagos, of University of Thessaly, recently presented a poster at the 19th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology in Cape Town, South Africa (ISME | International Society for Microbial Ecology). His research is about how microplastics interact with pesticides and veterinary drugs - finding that they drive significant temporal increases in Potential nitrification (PNR) and a persistent increase in nitrate levels in agricultural soils.

Dr Esperanza Huerta Lwanga recently gave a talk about MINAGRIS at the Deltares international conference on micro- and nano-plastics in soil, which took places in the Netherlands. The conference gave us an opportunity to learn and exchange knowledge with other scientists and decision-makers.
MINAGRIS partner, Amila Abeynaka, is a co-author on a recent study published in the Science of The Total Environment, which highlights the critical components necessary for a global approach to reducing plastic pollution, a pressing environmental challenge.
The study emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive strategy that addresses the entire lifecycle of plastics, from production to disposal. This approach is deemed essential for mitigating the extensive ecological and health impacts of plastic pollution, which is exacerbated by the presence of over 16,000 chemicals in plastics, many of which are toxic.
